Book Tagalog Short Stories for Beginners: 20 Captivating Short Stories to Learn Tagalog & Grow Your Vocabulary the Fun Way! (Easy Tagalog Stories Book 1) Review :

Lingo Mastery has embarked on another mission – to make Tagalog more accessible to a wider population. In their Introductory Note for the initial Tagalog Language Lessons book Lingo Mastery states: ‘Tagalog is spoken by about 20 million people as a native language, and largely spoken on the islands of Luzon, where Manila, the capital of the Philippines is located. Tagalog is also spoken in other parts of the world, there are over 400,000 Tagalog speakers in Canada and about 1.6 million in the United States, making Tagalog the fourth most-spoken language in the country…Languages are intricately linked to a country’s culture, so in order to really understand a culture’s finer aspects, you need to be able to speak the language as well...We’ve written this book to provide you as a Tagalog learner with concise, captivating stories that occur in a range of settings across the Philippines...Our goal is to supply you with useful, entertaining, helpful and challenging material that will not only allow you to learn the language but also help you pass the time and make the experience less formal and more fun.’After their success teaching Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, German, and Russian, now they turn to teaching Tagalog – the language of the Philippine Islands! And it works. Each chapter relates a story, a short summary, a vocabulary list, and a list of multiple choice questions (with answers!) to assure that all aspects of learning are covered wellThe technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine supplement to learning Tagalog, with ideas and themes to which everyone con relate. This is a book much needed at this time in our national status! Grady Harp, June 21
This book is definitely for advanced learners of Tagalog. As my native-speaker girlfriend put it: it's very "Tagalog." It seems that the writers did their best to eliminate any Taglish and Spanish-origin words and made the stories almost entirely "deep" Tagalog. She was city girl and uses a lot of Taglish, and she said she had a bit of a hard time reading it.I'd say I'm an advanced beginner, and it takes me hours to brute force my way through a page or two of this book. They give vocabulary words, but they're seemingly chosen at random. Sometimes they're elementary words, other times they're more advanced words, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why they've chosen the words they did as "vocab." They use pretty complex sentence structures and more obscure aspects for verbs and nouns. I'm probably gonna hang this one up until a little further down the road when I'll get more out of it, and keep working on my vocabulary and verb affixes until then. This book doesn't translate the stories so that you can check your comprehension, and the questions it gives you to check your comprehension are in Tagalog and using language that makes it so you can just find the matching sentence in the text to answer the questions. As long as you have a basic understanding of grammar and vocab, you can answer the questions just fine without really understanding what you're answering. This book seems like it was thrown together with very little effort in an attempt to juice some cash from Tagalog learners who are desperate for beginner-level reading material. It's a shame, really.I gave it three stars because, well, there's really not much else out there, and going through and translating these stories IS useful, no matter how crummy the book is. If you're advanced intermediate or advanced learner who's maybe not quite ready for literature or whatever, this might be a good bridge. Or you can brute force your way through it and maybe a few of the more advanced aspects and obscure vocabulary words will stick and you'll learn something! I mean, it's not terribly expensive, and I suppose it's something at least.
